On-line essay 1501HUM, Week12

TOPIC 2
The idea of the internet as cyberspace has been a part of our contemporary culture for some time, particularly in the popular medium of film. But is the concept of cyberspace still relevant to our contemporary society? Discuss with reference to your own experience of contemporary media.

The word "cyberspace" was coined by the science fiction author William
Gibson, when he sought a name to describe his vision of a global computer
network, linking all people, machines and sources of information in the world,
and through which one could move or "navigate" as through a virtual space.(
Heylighen 1993)

In this case, Cyberspace is the ‘place’ where information and massages appears to occur. Not inside your real life, in some other places. Cyberspace is the metaphorical space of computer systems and networks, in which electronic data are stored and online communication takes place. However, cyberspace is different from internet and website. It is a virtual space but include real data. So, it has been a part of our contemporary culture for some time. Cyberspace occurs under the society, culture, internet, website, social media, online-games, and more and more space.

As the World becomes more and more connected can you keep up with the changes in Cyberspace? Nowadays, our contemporary culture of internet and digital media, the edges between real and virtual become more and more ambiguous. Many events and situations have very powerful social effect from cyberspace of today. But is the concept of cyberspace still relevant to our contemporary society? I believe that changed a lot.

The United States is trying to improve cybersecurity by building relationships
among international law enforcement agencies. State Department officials hold
out as a model the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, which took effect
in 2004 and has been signed by 22 nations, including the United States but not
Russia or China. (NY Times 2009)

Many of my friends first time read the concept of cyberspace, they will relevant of science fiction, because of William Gibson. However, cyberspace is no longer limited in traditional concept; it’s more and more popular in different areas. With the development of network and internet technology, cyberspace replaces many traditional information exchange platform. For example in cyberspace of war, the tools of war from cold-arms, gun-power, improve to use computer power as a weapon. In the meantime, cyberspace has many new features in this case, such as privacy, penetration and peril. So, from news, we can see many nations become pay more attention to build and improve cyberspace, cybersecurity and make rules for cybercrimes. Moreover, virtual reality of cyber technology is very useful in military training, as far as I know this technology is very popular in many countries simulated training for pilot, spaceman and so on.

On other hand, cyberspace has become most important part in our daily life. Millions of people stay in home, work and play depends on internet, mobile phone, blog, software. Cyberspace makes a great role in stay-at-home economy. People can finish tasks from internet, they can book food from different website, and they don’t need go outside and keep alive. Such as online/computer games, they played by consumer and the consumer provide profit to the game company. More and more people immersed themselves totally in virtual/cyberspace life. In addition, same as internet shopping such as eBay, it’s a cyberspace business. How does Cyberspace fit round the Real World? From mobile, msn, face book, and other media to connect people who already know and new friend. It’s a easy way to make cyberspace fit to real life. So, cyberspace is not only a system made by information and massages, but also we can put new blood in cyberspace.

I talked cyberspace on army and daily life before, I want to talk the effect of cyberspace to school education.

"1 million people connected - - or more often trying to connect across
rickety copper cables - to a kludgey, text-driven computer network choked with
E-mail and binary scientific gibberish." (Ramo, 1997)

In this huge informational time, Education officer, government and teachers must think about how cyberspace and internet technology working in school/classroom study. Students are moving closer to the actual knowledge itself as "teaching and learning are fused and transformed into hyperlearning.( Perleman,1992) Cyberspace may be seen as a fusion of technological threads that include "artificial intelligence broadband telecommunications, information processing, and bio-technology."(Perleman 1992) In addition, Perleman(1992) points out "smart environment", "telecosm" communication, a kit of hypermedia, and brain technology are relevant this. So, from different areas of cyberspace in school, Except the benefit from I mentioned before, cyberspace in education is convenient for students and teachers. Moreover, they can share the idea of research to other students, functions of e-mal and instant message tools can lead students have better Interactive. We can get improvement from this kind of share. We can get many times benefit from an open cyberspace.

In summary, the topic asks is cyberspace still relevant to our contemporary society. However I think it’s becoming more and more relevant. It has powerful effect to various fields. Cyberspace will relevant more areas in future life. XD

week 9 lecture notes.

`Yeah ,week 9 is gone, that means we have sweet break. XD
`Firstly, the special guest lecturer : Jason Nelson, from Gold Coast, meanwhile, he has his site called Secret Technology , that's amazing and fantastics. Especially, I like that odd one This is how you will die.

`In lecture, Jason Nelson was talking about the old idea of cyber utopia. He gave the ideas of consumers purchase goods and servers from internet. The other thing talked about internet SNS or something, its use for communication .. and then he asked us what do you use the internet for, how many websites we visit on a regular visits… Moreover, Jason Nelson talked about was the rise and demise of websites.....

week 8 task, political participation

"What opportunities can you find for political participation via the internet."

I would say that political make a great roll via the internet. Especially for me, I come from China, I believe that China Government gave much pressure in the internet and made huge effect in the internet. Such as two part, one is baned many thing which government think it's bad for people. For example, they baned YouTube, Google for long time, means that Chinese cant log on these website, and Chinese usually cant visit foreign website. Other function is posting political idea via the internet, such as new political article, or activities. As a Chinese, you can always catch the political or government movement, they want you do or want you dont do.

week 8 lecture notes.

We don't have lecture and tut on wed, week 8. I just summary and copy the idea from course content...

The lecture notes talked about Political Possibilities.
Firstly, we'd clear and definite the idea of CyberPolitics ,which is the mean the politics of the internet that exists predominantly on the internet. eDemocracy , we mean the internet's intervention in and contribution to real world politics that exists predominantly off the internet.(Stephen Stockwell 2009) . The idea of eDemocracy is the relationshio between the political and the internet. It's kind of force or obligation.

Cyberpunk
One outlet for political expression with regards to the internet is Cyberpunk. This genre studies the political possibilities inherent in tn cyberspace. Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre based in the possibilities inherent in computers, genetics, body modifications and corporate developments in the near future.

This word is combining cybernetics and punk, it's kind of technology under the internet or computer digital, collects and manages the informations.
In this case, MATRIX is one example of cyberpunk.....

Week 5 task -- 3D world

So ,that awesome class, I clicked Active Worlds, viewed the virtual life. Got some ideas of 3D. Actually i used play online game WoW(World of Warcraft), it likes a 3D virtual life, isn't it.

Then, whats the difference betweeen these 3d worlds and text based social networks. Firstly, I think msn or other IM tool, the friend list almost were your real friend and family. In contrust, the 3d chat room is more like getting new friend from there or have fun. Moreover, its different way to communicate....

In 3d enviromental place, you can dress, build and have some increment services(payed user). Its a sense of flaunt, pride? ehh ,i think its more dangerous then IM . However, its more lively.

lecture summary , Week 5

So ,this week lecture is very intersting. It talked about Media, social media, and web2.0. It was funny and ralate to our daily life. It's about new tech and networks.

Firstly, it's the idea of technology and media, virtual community and individual identity. It is different relationships between individual people or realms. Using these techology, people can contact someone similar and share interests .

Moreover, discussed the ego centric social network. It's not still a room for share interests, but a place for people to talk friend or family they already know. Focus has moved away from groups of people with common interests to networks where you (the individual) is the common thread.(lecture notes)

w4 task - qustions 2

1How do search engines rank the stuff they find on the internet?
who, or what, makes one page (that you might get in your search results) more useful than another one, so that it is put at the top of your search results?
2what are some of your favourite search engines? why do you like one more than others?

1. Basically, something most relevant will rank higher. For example, in conversation, Jack talked Maggie, Mike talked Maggie, Nick mentioned Maggie as well, so Maggie must be popular. In internet, link most like 'quote', in B website linked A = in conversation B mentioned A, if C,D,E,F all mentioned A, so, A is the important one, thats A will be rank highest. Thats called pagerank rate, if you wanna check your pagerank rate, you can click this google free toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/.

Of course, for Google, or Yahoo some commerical searching engines, they will rank these websitle based on bid fees.

2. I usually use Google as my first search engine. Beacuse it briefly and concisely, at the same time, there are lots of extra function in google, such as maps, GPS, translate tools. Anyway, I am Chinese, when I serch for Music, Video, or picture, I always have another choice.

W3 task 2 - my experiences with communication technologies

The second part of the task relates to your own experiences with communication technologies.

At the begining, I come from China. There are still popular using new communication technologies communicate with friends and family for long times.

When I was in high school(1999), there is a communication tool that called OICQ become popular in people's life, it similar to ICQ. And this time, OICQ grown into China's largest and most used Internet service portal.tool in China I think. Like Msn or Facebook, most of ppl in China have this one.

Communicate frds or family with these new communication techonologies is much more free and easily, meanwhile, there are lots of optional to talk them in different ways.

Of course, privacy is always an issue of me using new tech. For instance,.From facesbook or google, other user can collect information about me or other user. Sometime I dont want to provide this information to that person. However, they can from my friend list or something relevant to get information easily. Yep, i usually got some trouble like that.
